Am I Making Money?

We’ve opened registration for our first 2012 workshop; Am I Making Money? What it Takes to be in Business.

If you scratch your head wondering whether your business idea will actually pay the bills, then this workshop is for you! The ability to get paid is what distinguishes a business from a hobby. Many go into business because they have a compelling vision to improve the world around them. However, turning your dream into a reality is not possible without a sound understanding of your balance sheet.

In this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Develop your own “Elevator Speech” to use to network your business
  • Identify the costs of doing business and distinguish between variable and fixed costs
  • Determine your break-even point and the amount you need to sell to pay yourself
  • Measure your profit or loss
  • Understand how cash flow works Continue reading

Are You Ready to Mix and Match?

Applications are now open for the next round of Mixer Match for Visual Artists and Galleries scheduled for Wednesday, April 25, at 6:00 pm! Yay! This is one of our most popular events. Now in our third year, the Mixer Match phenomenon continues to grow and be a valuable learning experience for blossoming to mid-career artists. The April Mixer Match pairs visual artists and art professionals in an evening of fast paced speed networking.

What is speed networking? In the Mixer Match, participants have only two quick minutes to pitch their portfolios to each of the 20 local art dealers, gallery owners or curators. The pace is lightening fast, so you better have your elevator pitch down. Get tips from this article on how to make the most of the Mixer Match experience.

Besides having this valuable face time with art dealers, there is also time to mingle with fellow artists and what we call “Superstars.” Our Superstars are some of the most successful artists and professional advisers in our community. As you wait for your round to pitch, they are on hand to answer questions, give advice, and offer tips on how to approach galleries successfully.

Calling All Artists!

We heart supporting local artists, and when there is a cash prize involved, why, we get even more excited!

Chinook Book is conducting its second annual cover contest and we want to help spread the word!  Hopefully you saw the 2012 book featuring the lovely oil painting by Portland’s very own Rachel Austin? Well 2013 could be your year. Chinook Book would like to see applicants from Portland or from those who have lived here once.

Each winner receives $500 and their art is featured on the cover of the 2013 Chinook Book in both print and mobile, released in September 2012. Chinook Book is sold at local retailers and by hundreds of local school and non-profit groups as a community-oriented fundraiser.

Good luck!

Instructors Wanted

Share your know-how, submit a workshop proposal!

I Heart Art: Portland is officially back from a holiday hiatus, and we’re busy planning our programing launch for March. That means WE NEED YOU! We are currently taking proposals for our 2012 business-development workshop series. This year we plan to host six workshops, two Mixer-Match sessions and a minimum of two salon discussions. But we can’t do any of this without you!

The Details:

We are looking for six workshops that appeal to a broad base of makers such as; metalsmiths, textile arts, ceramicists, painters, jewelers and photographers, to name a few. We want topics that are beneficial to the creative community of Portland and that are aimed to advance the skills and know-how of those creative entrepreneurs. This year we are particularly interested in workshops developed to appeal to advanced-level business development skills; i.e. bookkeeping, accounting and taxes,  and inventory tracking, etc.

All workshops are held on Saturday from 11 am – 1:30 pm (two hours of instruction and one 30 minute break.) You should also know that while I Heart Art: Portland provides a location, seating and minimal staffing for each workshop, we require a self-sufficient workshop structure. All instruction is the responsibility of the Instructor. In exchange for sharing your knowledge, we’ll compensate you a cool $150.

To get your creative ideas flowing, take a look at our list of workshops for the past two years, then jot down your plan and send us your proposal. We can’t wait to see what you come up with.

NOTE: Review of proposals begins February 28th, 2012. Confirmation of engagement with I Heart Art: Portland on March 2, 2012.
