Elevator Pitch Primer: 8 Things To Keep in Mind

by Alicia Nagel, Brand Identity and Graphic Designer

An elevator pitch tells someone what you do in as few words as possible while piquing as much interest as possible. Here’s an example:

I make and sell handmade jewelry on Etsy under the name Lotus Adornments. Recently my work has been featured in Willamette Week’s Style section and was spotted being worn by Chloe Sevigny. Each piece is handmade by me in sterling silver or copper and is a die-cast replica of something precious found in nature like a seed pod or shell. This process reveals the unexpected beauty found in nature and encourages people to look closer at the world around them. It’s a good combination of modern yet feminine style—a look that lets you be sophisticated even when dressing down.

Would you like a card? You can see some of my work on my website. I have some new designs on there for Fall.

Crafting Connections: The Mixer Match Way

How to make the most of the I Heart Art: Portland Mixer Match speed-networking event.

Our upcoming Mixer Match event is one of our most popular, successful and fun events. For those makers participating, we know nerves can get the best of you. Compressing your story into thirty seconds can be daunting. That’s why we are excited to bring a little “insider information” to the forefront.

Deenie Wallace has been a regular at I Heart Art workshops and events, and has participated in both the Retail Mixer Match for her lampwork glass and in the Gallery Mixer Match for her art. Energized by her experiences, she offered up this article to help Mixer Match participants better prepare for the upcoming event, offering important tips to make the most out of a fast-paced experience.

You are a handmade artist, which also makes you a small business owner. Being a handmade artist would be so simple, if it meant simply creating art. However, if you want to support yourself on your art—you have to figure out how and where to sell it. I Heart Art’s Mixer Match is a wonderful opportunity for promoting the growth of your handmade business.

Another successful speed-networking event went down last week, on May 18. With 16 gallery/curator/art professional stations to rotate through, the 40 participating artists only had two minutes to present their work for each of them.

Many thanks to those who participated, including our “superstars” and the kinda gallery owners curators and arts professionals who gave audience to the eager artists.

A special thank you is also in order to Design Within Reach, for hosting the event once again, and to Deschutes Brewery, who donated the beer for the evening.

Did you participate? Tell us about your experience in the comments.
