Seeing the Forest for the Trees

It’s been two full years since that first meeting of the minds—that planted seed that grew and blossomed into the I Heart Art: Portland program. After two full years of hosting accessible professional development workshops, convening community salon discussions, and devising unique speed-networking events that reach into Portland’s vibrant community of makers, I look back and I smile to myself.

Connecting to Your Community: Part One

This article is part of a series addressing the topics discussed during our March 30 Salon Discussion, Connecting to Your Community. Some background information about the subject is available in a preliminary post, Learn to Share.

Author’s Note: I do not profess to be an expert on the subject matter, but I do hold a special interest in this community and a passion for the topic. That said, I am still learning, and welcome any feedback in the comments, be they in agreement with what I’ve said, questions about finer points, or arguments in opposition. This is a conversation, not a lecture.

Instructor Profile: Sam MacKenzie

Join us tonight at Every Day Wine (1520 NE Alberta) for our second salon discussion, Getting Artsy: Approaching and Showing at Galleries.

Interested in showing in galleries but don’t know where to start? Have some experience but would like to discuss ways to improve your presentation? Join in the conversation. Salon leader Sam MacKenzie will share some basic info on approaching and working with galleries, then we will discuss your questions and experiences with galleries and portfolios.

Sam MacKenzie is a photographer, ceramicist, farmer, educator, and dabbler. She spent six years as a member of non-profit co-op Sixth Street Gallery. During her time at Sixth Street, she was artistic director for several juried shows and served as president of the board of directors. Sam likes tasty beverages, cute critters, and buying too many art supplies.

Our Salon Discussions are free and open to the public, but we do appreciate an RSVP through the event page.

Last week I held a Salon Discussion about how we, as artists and creatives, can best connect to our community. Through two hours of fascinating conversation, we examined some of the best steps we can take to give back and contribute our creative gifts, as well as discussing some best practices and road blocks along the way.
